With our strong focus on innovation, Mercian Labels are delighted to announce the launch of the UK’s first truly recyclable, sustainable, water-based, digitally printed, paper flexible packaging product, which has been developed in conjunction with our digital print partners at SCREEN Europe, and the market leading paper manufacturing experts at SAPPI, on behalf of the specialty chocolate makers at Whitakers.

UK’s First 100% Recyclable Paper Flexible Packaging

Blending the use of uncoated paper, with a water-based polymer emulsion to provide barrier properties, this material is 100% recyclable in normal household waste streams, is suitable for use on traditional heat seal HFFS (Horizontal Form Fill and Seal) or VFFS (Vertical Form Fill and Seal) flow wrap lines and will protect the product against oxygen and moisture / gas ingress for 12-24 months, without any additional varnish or protection coatings.

Digitally Printed

As the material is printed digitally, customers can also enjoy all of the benefits of minimal waste, quick set up, flexibility, customisation of SKUs, the removal of high MOQs (Minimum Order Quantities) and SCREEN’s built in excellent print quality, with the bond between inks and face stock being very, very good, with no scuffing.

Additional Benefits

100% water-based, food safe inks only add to the recyclability and suitability benefits, whilst in initial trials, the new material has sealed successfully at circa 120-130 degrees (rather than the normal 180-200 degrees), which could also offer potential energy savings.
