Today, we are proud to celebrate an incredible milestone, as we mark the occasion of Tim Murphy’s 40 years’ service with Mercian Labels.

Having joined us way back in 1986 when we were still based at a very small site on Pinfold Lane in Penkridge, Tim is deferentially referred to as ‘the father of the house’.

Over those four decades he has become one of the most recognisable and respected figures in our factory, having worked on just about every press and technology we have ever had. He is always one of the first to master any new machinery, (the operation and understanding of which has changed immeasurably since he first started in the industry) and has built a level of knowledge around the manufacture of self-adhesive labels that few can rival. Quite simply, if anyone has a question around labels, he usually knows the answer.

To further prove his industry expertise and wanting to push the boundaries of what was thought possible at the time, Tim also played a key role in the team that developed our LabelLock® tamper evident security labels and tape, helping Mercian Labels enter and lead what was then a new market for us. Delivering innovation, backed by his very real, hands-on knowledge and experience.

But beyond his technical skill, Tim is very much the heart and voice of the factory. Known for his larger than life presence, unmistakable laugh (which somehow can be heard above even the noisiest of presses) and his obsession with commenting on the weather, Tim brings true character, humour and energy to every shift. He is a mentor, a sounding board and someone who most colleagues have learned from over the years.

Whether he is arriving on his motorbike; still sporting those L plates after all these years and no matter what the weather may throw at him; sharing a story, or quietly making sure everything is running as it should, Tim’s influence on the Mercian Labels story goes far beyond the machines he has operated.

Just be sure he doesn’t give you a friendly ‘tap’ on the back, as he may unintentionally knock you into next week! He sometimes doesn’t know his own strength!

In his spare time, Tim is a lifelong supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers and likes to relax with a lager or two (although we are not sure if the two are connected based on their recent performance 😂).

So a HUGE Congratulations then Tim, on 40 outstanding years of service. An almost unheard of record in the modern workplace. Thank you for your dedication, your knowledge, your experience and the personality you bring to the Mercian family every day.
