The future of football

As leading printers of barcode labels, we can’t help but start to see barcodes everywhere and in everything.

Those small black and white stripes that appear on just about everything we buy; which make our shopping trips so much easier, and are essential to the daily operations of retailers around the world.

BUT, with the fast approaching @GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative driving the global move towards 2D Barcodes / QR Codes, we are looking ahead at how this will be a genuine ‘game changer’ for businesses… …but wait… …if QR codes WILL change the game… …just how far could this go??? 🤔

Game Changing

What if they could even improve the ‘beautiful’ game? 🤯

And so; with the new #football season about to kick off; it started us wondering whether some football teams who traditionally play in black & white vertically striped kits, could get ahead of the game and start a trend with the next generation of barcodes. 🤔

Just think about how this could make the whole football fan experience even better than it already is; truly game changing!

Imagine each player wearing a shirt with their own dedicated and unique QR code on it.

Fans could scan their favourite players’ shirt and link through to dedicated web pages, constantly updated with their performance stats, including goals and assists, distance run, minutes played, club history and so much more. You could link to videos, socials, and so it goes on.

And by using dynamic QR codes the data behind the code can be continually updated throughout the season, without having to reprint / update the QR codes on the shirts for each game!

It’s a win-win.

Match Officials

But we don’t want to forget the match officials though; so we thought that they could also upgrade from using a pencil and notebook to keep a record of the on pitch action, substitutions, etc., and move on to simply scanning the QR code on the players’ shirt to add (or remove; if you know the right people), details of any infringements as the game goes on.

Everyone will love it.

So, what do you think?

Is this the future of football???

Or have we been staring at barcodes for too long? 😂😂

I’m going to lie down in a darkened room now…
