Warehouse Health and Safety

At Mercian Labels, Health & Safety isn’t a box ticking exercise, it is a core focus.

Every decision we make is guided by one simple principle: Everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.

We are incredibly proud that we recently passed 1,600 safe days (almost 4 ½ years or more than 228 consecutive weeks) without a lost time incident. A milestone that reflects the collective commitment of our entire team in maintaining the highest safety standards across the site.

This is a great achievement, but we are all very aware that we need to maintain these high standards, every minute of every day to keep everyone safe, which is why our internal Health & Safety Committee are so highly valued, and their recommendations are soon acted upon.

One recent example was the identification of an opportunity to enhance safety within our warehouse, whereby we installed a cost effective yet very efficient automated audible alert system to protect colleagues during forklift movements.

The new safety system:

  • A simple motion detector has been installed across the entry to our warehouse
  • When someone enters the warehouse, they ‘break the beam’
  • This immediately triggers an audible alarm attached to the forklift

The result is that the forklift driver is instantly notified that someone has entered their working area, meaning that they can either stop work until it is safe to carry on, or to be extra vigilant if they can see where the person is stood, or is working.

It is a simple solution, but one that significantly strengthens awareness and reduces risk.

Health & Safety is a shared responsibility and small, productive improvements like this can make all the difference. Our 1,600+ safe days are not a result of luck, they are about culture, vigilance and teamwork.

A huge ‘thank you’ to our team for their continued commitment to making Mercian Labels a safe place to work.
